Three original batik sarongs from Pekalongan Spiral hand painted with bleach
Signed with by the craft denim team members personally.
Patched together and stop stitched
Three traditional batik sarongs from Pekalongan form the foundation of this piece, representing layered histories of trade and craftsmanship. Across its surface, a spiral is hand-painted with bleach.
Each member of the Craft Denim team has signed the fabric by hand, their names painted directly onto the material. These personal gestures transform the sarong into a collective document that honours the hands behind the making, and reclaims visibility for those often left unnamed in the chain of production.
The treatment of the fabric made it fragile and when it was washed it was damaged in some places. Musfrod, tailor at Craft denim and Studio Sejauh patched and stop-stitched it back together. Through this process the work becomes an assemblage of histories mended and made visible. Through this act of collaboration, this Eliza van Zuylen design, once a symbol of cultural and colonial appropiation, is reimagined as a shared surface of recognition and repair.
