Cotton yarn dyed with cloves
White cotton

To prepare for the ikat weave white cotton yarn is stretched on a frame, on which Nazif handpainted the spiral motif with natural clove dye. Unlike some of the other works, these yarns are not dipped in soda ash, allowing the grey of the cloves to remain. The painted threads are then woven by hand on a loom together with white cotton. Through the process of weaving the spiral appears.

Every gesture, from painting to weaving, is a meditation on balance: between control and chance, material and weaver, gesture and structure.
