White cotton from with the Obak Laut (sea wave) pattern by Sejauh Mata Memandang
Jacquard woven by Craft Denim
The base of this work is the white cotton jacquard-woven at Craft Denim, featuring the Obak Laut (sea wave) pattern designed by Sejauh Mata Memandang. The textile is folded and repeatedly dip-dyed in natural clove dye. After being fixed in iron, some sections are treated with soda ash, transforming the greys into warm browns, while others remain untouched preserving their soft, smoky hue.
The Obak Laut pattern, a symbol of movement and continuity, becomes a meditation on transformation. Through its layers of dipping, folding, and fixing, the textile records the notion of time.
The sea wave becomes both material and metaphor: a reminder of motion, memory, and the ebb and flow of cultural lineage.
