With the central theme Ties that Bind, the State of Fashion Biennale in the summer of 2024 explored the complex interweavings between tradition, indigenous knowledge, and the political potential of clothing. This edition highlighted creative practices in fashion, textiles, and contemporary art from the Global South. The decentralised biennale, curated by Louise Bennetts and Rachel Dedman in collaboration with Sunny Dolat, Kallol Datta, and Hanayrá Negreiros, took place in Arnhem, Nairobi, Bengaluru, and São Paulo. Together with artists, makers from around the world, and the public, an in-depth dialogue was conducted about the power and meaning of clothing in various cultures.

With more than 48,000 visitors participating in the rich programme offerings in the three sister sites, as well as in the ‘home site’ of Arnhem, with main locations at the Rembrandt Theatre, Rozet, Museum Arnhem, and Plaatsmaken, the turnout was impressive. The biennale received rave reviews and extensive media attention both domestically and internationally.
