Rotterdam is incredibly rich in diversity and is home to more than 173 nationalities. Yet there is a huge gap between residents of different backgrounds, educations and incomes. Team Rotterdam examined a neighborhood where this dichotomy is rapidly emerging due to gentrification: the Old North. How can fashion play a positive role in promoting contact and social cohesion in this neighborhood?
Instead of focusing on bridging the differences between residents, the designers chose to focus their research on ways to find shared values and stories. Team Rotterdam proposed a set of tools that encourage new conversations with residents of all ages and backgrounds. Using fashion and identity as their basis, the designers sought common ground and connections between old residents and newcomers.
