Community Dressing, a journey through Dutch national costumes

Preserving knowledge of traditional costumes for the next generation

‘Community Dressing’ is a documentary series about Dutch National Costumes. The aim of this crowdfunded project is to help spread knowledge about traditional costume making and prevent that knowledge from disappearing. Researcher Thijs Adriaans of FRAGMENTS tries to define the state of contemporary fashion consumption by studying regional costumes. By focusing on the almost disappeared Dutch costumes and its traditions, standards, values, creation and its passing, Adriaans hopes to be able to offer a glance at the costumes compared to today's fashion system.

The state of contemporary fashion consumption vs regional costumes

we need to preserve knowledge about traditional national costumes to prevent this knowledge from disappearing

In 'Community Dressing', experts, craftsmen and wearers try to answer the following question: How has the current fashion system changed and / or stayed the same in relation to costume dressing?

The underlying purpose of the documentary series is to investigate questions that have recently been at stake about fashion. What is fashion? What is the meaning of our clothing? What effect has the development of the fashion system after the industrial revolution (democratization / globalization) had? The exciting thing is that this mainly updates the phenomenon of the regional costumes as a Dutch fashion heritage and may give it a new contemporary meaning.
