Designer, maker or is fashion your discipline? Apply now for the Open Call of State of Fashion curated by FDFA, to create new work as part of the upcoming edition of the State of Fashion BiennaleTies that Bind.

State of Fashion is a fashion platform where alternatives to the current fashion system are given a stage. We critically connect fashion to the social issues and challenges of our time. The central question is: how can fashion contribute to a better world?

The curators of State of Fashion 2024, Louise Bennetts and Rachel Dedman, have developed four themes that will be explored during the Biennale in Arnhem. These themes are the starting point for the FDFA and are the ideas we invite you, as Arnhem creators and designers, to think about

Protest, and the Performance of Politics explores the ways in which clothing and the body function as spaces and instruments of resistance.

Dismantling Tradition critically examines definitions of “traditional” and the assumption that makers and artists from the South are expected to perform or use their heritage.

Designing Integrity looks at the ways designers are forging alternative systems to existing fashion production practices, championing slow making, challenging waste colonialism and amplifying the voices of those typically marginalized in the global economy.

The Fabric of Shelter considers clothing as the first home with which we navigate the world and celebrates the intimate and familiar power of textiles.

Are you an independently working fashion or product designer and would you like to share your work with the visitors and residents of Arnhem in May and June 2024 during State of Fashion Biennale? Do(es) you live or work in Arnhem, have you studied here or were you born here? Or do you feel connected to Arnhem in another way? Then we are looking for you!

How do you participate?
We ask you to submit your plan for this Open Call. We ask you to submit your plan for this Open Call. Describe or visualise in this plan your idea for an installation/presentation/performance around the theme Ties that Bind and who knows, maybe you will be selected as one of the five designers to exhibit in Rozet!

The deadline for the Open Call has now passed. For questions, please contact Fashion + Design Festival Arnhem at:

Your idea will be discussed by a selection committee consisting of Fashion Partners 025, Rozet and the curators of State of Fashion. De inzendingen worden beoordeeld op vooruitstrevendheid, begrijpbaarheid en aansluiting bij de thematiek Ties that Bind. It is important that as a designer you are in some way connected to (the creative climate of) Arnhem. Educational background is not important, whether you studied at ArtEZ or Rijn IJssel or are self-taught; everyone is welcome to submit a plan! The selection will be announced in mid-February. Each selected designer will receive a working budget to bring the relevant idea to fruition. Construction of the presentation will be in week 19/20. In addition, you should also connect to the programming of State of Fashion curated by FDFA in another way, for example through a lecture, workshop, performance or other (small) event.
