Lovers of wool and silk often regard moths with suspicion. You don’t want them turning your favorite wool sweater or beautiful silk blouse into a breeding ground and food source for their offspring. But just like butterflies, moths come in many forms. When you examine them up close, you can’t help but marvel at their soft bodies, unique wing patterns, and characteristic antennae.

In this masterclass, you will take the richness of shapes, colors, and patterns of the moth as a starting point to design your own moth. Merlijne will share her inspiration and methods with you and provide you with a palette of embroidery stitches. Through embroidery in various techniques and materials, you’ll give shape to a unique moth. Through embroidery in various techniques and materials, you’ll give shape to a unique moth. You can incorporate this into a brooch or patch to embellish your clothing, or perhaps to disguise a moth hole… Experience with needle and thread and a somewhat meticulous approach is required. Merlijne will provide materials, but it’s fun if you bring along your own special thread or bead.

Merlijne Marell believes in fairy tales, and in her studio, she works on shaping her own mythology. This gradually takes shape in fabulous picture books and narrative designs. She has a pronounced preference for traditional techniques and processes and refuses to choose between woodcut, embroidery, Delft blue, monotype, and writing. Through her designs, she aims to share the wonder and love for material, nature, and language with the audience.
