State of Fashion 2026 Biennale: Available to Promise; Hidden Systems, Shared Futures
The fourth edition of the State of Fashion Biennale ran from 14 May to 28 June 2026 across Arnhem, the Netherlands, under the title Available to Promise; Hidden Systems, Shared Futures. The Biennale comprised a central exhibition, complemented by a city-wide programme of exhibitions, performances, talks and interventions. As a leading platform for critical fashion thinking and practice, State of Fashion explores how fashion and textiles can contribute to alternative futures, and bring about new forms of collaboration, responsibility and collective imagination.

Curated by Anne Zhou, Anouchka van Driel and Shanu Walpita, the Biennale approached fashion not as object or image, but as system. It examined the infrastructures that make fashion possible: supply chains, platforms, labour networks, trade routes and the ecological resources that sustain them. Borrowed from logistics terminology, “Available to Promise” referred to what can be delivered, when and to whom.

Structured around five interconnected pillars — Develop, Distribute, Hype, Experience and Transform — and accompanied by ONsite residencies in China, Ghana and Sri Lanka, the Biennale brought together artists, designers, researchers and practitioners whose work illuminates fashion’s hidden infrastructures from multiple geographical and situated perspectives. Through newly created works and multidisciplinary projects, the exhibition mapped the movements of materials, labour, knowledge, capital and desire across different contexts.

Designed by OMA/AMO, the exhibition architecture staged an encounter between the visible forms of fashion and the infrastructures underlying them. The visual identity by International Magic similarly drew on the codes and languages of logistics and circulation. Complementing the exhibition, LIBRARY of promise, developed together with the International Library of Fashion Research (Oslo), presented a curated selection of publications and magazines tracing the printed and visual cultures through which fashion circulates and represents itself.
